SailMaine, founded in the early 2000s, was established with the goal of making sailing accessible and affordable while promoting a love of the water in Maine’s coastal communities. Through learn-to-sail programs, high school and collegiate racing, and adaptive sailing opportunities, SailMaine has enriched the lives of countless sailors, both beginners and experienced. Early Collaboration: Supporting Grassroots Sailing
The partnership between Portland Yacht Services and SailMaine began when the organization was still in its infancy. Recognizing the importance of affordable access to sailing, PYS founder, Phineas Sprague Jr., and his team provided critical infrastructure and logistical support to help SailMaine establish a foothold on Portland’s waterfront. From boat storage and maintenance assistance to advocacy for expanded sailing programs, PYS played a key role in enabling SailMaine to grow into a thriving organization.

The Casco Bay Community Boating Center, operated by SailMaine, has become a hub for high school varsity sailing teams, training young athletes for competition at the national level. Each summer, hundreds of young sailors participate in instructional programs, gaining experience in boats such as Frostys, Optis, 420s, and Ynglings.

SailMaine also offers courses for adults of all experience levels, providing opportunities for new and seasoned sailors alike to refine their skills and enjoy the beauty of Maine’s coastal waters. A particularly impactful initiative is SailMaine’s adaptive sailing program, which allows individuals with disabilities to participate in the sport through the Maine Special Olympics Program. PYS is honored to support this initiative, recognizing the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in the sailing community.
